For this year’s (i.e. 2022) Halloween my family and I have decided to dress as various characters from the Harry Potter Movies. One of them will be Luna Lovegood and in this short blog post, I’m going to show you, how to create Luna’s interesting beetle ring.
To make Luna’s glasses you will need the following:
- Black glass beads (2 mm – 5/64 ”)
- Blue glass beads (2 mm – 5/64 ”) (optional)
- Thin jewelry-making wire (0,3 mm – 1/64 ”)
- Scissors or wire cutter
- Ring

How to make a DIY Luna Lovegood ring
Cut 60 cm (about 23 ”) of wire. It is longer than needed for the beetle, but more comfortable to work with. Make sure the wire is nice and straight and has no loops on it, which would make it difficult to string the beads.

Make the body and legs of the beetle
1. String 3 blue beads and align them in the center of the thin wire.

2. String another 4 blue beads on one end of the wire. Make sure to keep the first row of beads in the middle of the wire.

3. Loop the other end through the new row of beads and pull both wire ends into opposite directions.

4. On the wire on the right-hand side loop 5 black beads.

5. Loop the wire around the last bead and move it through the first four black beads.

6. Pull the wire end to create the leg of the beetle.

7. On the other wire bead 5 black beads.

8. Loop the wire around the the last bead and move it through the first four black beads.

9. Pull the wire to create the other leg of the beetle.

10. String 6 blue beads to continue building the body of the beetle.

11. Loop the other end of the wire through the beads and pull both wire ends.

12. String another 8 blue beads.

13. Loop the opposite wire through the beads and pull both wire ends.

14. String another 8 blue beads.

15. Loop the other wire end through the beads and pull both wire ends.

16. String 8 blue beads.

17. Loop the other end of the wire through the row of beads and pull the wires into opposite directions.

18. String 5 black beads to make another leg.

19. Loop the wire around the last black bead and move it through the rest and pull the wire.

20. The leg is ready.

21. On the other wire end string 5 black beads.

22. Loop the wire around the last black bead and move it through the rest of the black beads.

23. Pull the wire and shape it to create another beetle leg.

24. String 6 blue beads.

25. Loop the wire through the beads and pull the wire ends into opposite directions.

26. String 6 blue beads.

27. Loop the other wire end through the beads and pull the wire ends into opposite directions.

28. String 5 blue beads.

29. Loop the other wire through the beads and pull the wire ends into opposite directions.

30. Bead 5 black beads to make a new leg.

31. Loop the wire end around the last black bead and move it through the rest of the black beads.

32. On the other wire string 5 black beads to make another leg.

33. Loop the wire around the last bead and move it through the rest of the black beads.

Continue with creating the head of the beetle
34. String 4 black beads.

35. Loop the other wire through the row of black beads and pull both wire ends into opposite directions.

36. String 3 black beads.

37. Loop the other wire end through the beads and pull the wire ends into opposite directions.

The beaded beetle is compete and your ring is almost ready.

Finish the beetle ring
Loop one of the wire around the edge bead and move it through the other two beads. The two wires should be sticking out of one bead (see the image below).

Twist the wires a few (2-3) times (see the image below).

Cut the excess wire ends off (see the image below).

Glue the beetle to the ring and let the glue dry. Your DIY Luna Lovegood beetle ring is ready!
